Blue Spirulina
Spirulina is a blue-green algae that grows in freshwater lakes, ponds, and rivers. Spirulina gets its vivid blue colour from the pigment-protein complex phycocyanin. The phycocyanin in spirulina provides many health benefits, including its powerful antioxidant effect. Antioxidants help to protect the body from oxidative stress and inflammation, which harm our cells’ DNA and can increase our risk of cancer.
Per gram, spirulina is extremely high in nutrients including iron, potassium, calcium, vitamin B3 and magnesium. It is an excellent protein source with 3 grams of spirulina providing 2 grams of protein making it the most nutrient-dense food on the planet. Spirulina has been researched in pregnant women and children suffering from malnutrition where high doses (up to 10 grams) were provided to improve nutritional status.
Other benefits of spirulina include the reduction of hay fever, protecting heart health. Spirulina may also help to lower body weight and have blood sugar balancing properties. Spirulina may also increase iron, ferritin and hemoglobin levels.
