Study: Effectiveness of Moducare® for Allergic Rhinitis in Children

Allergic rhinitis, a common condition characterized by nasal congestion, sneezing, and itching, significantly impacts the quality of life of affected individuals, especially children. Traditional treatments often involve antihistamines and nasal corticosteroids, but many parents are concerned about the side effects and seek safer and more effective therapies to eliminate allergy symptoms.
Study on Efficacy of Moducare® for Allergic Rhinitis
A recent study conducted by researchers in Greece explored the efficacy of Moducare, containing natural plant-based substances known as beta-sitosterol (BSS) and beta-sitosterol glucoside (BSSG), in children with allergic rhinitis.
The study included 30 children with allergic rhinitis, as determined by the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) criteria, and elevated levels of total IgE immunoglobulin (an antibody produced by the immune system in response to an invader; it is primarily involved in allergic responses). The study participants, averaging 10 years of age, received treatment consisting of one capsule of Moducare three times daily for six months.
Before and after the treatment period, the children underwent clinical examinations, including assessments of symptoms such as nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea (excessive runny nose and postnasal drip), sneezing, and itching. Additionally, measurements of Peak Inspiratory Flow Rate and Peak Nasal Inspiratory Flow Rate were taken. Laboratory analyses included assessments of total IgE levels, blood eosinophils (a type of white blood cell involved in fighting infections and allergies), and eosinophils in nasal secretions.
Improved Allergy Symptom Severity
The results of the study revealed significant improvements in various parameters following six months of treatment with Moducare. The mean clinical score, based on symptom severity, decreased by over 60%. All children experienced improved nasal airflow. Notably, total IgE levels, as well as blood and nasal eosinophils decreased. Children experienced statistically significant improvement in runny nose, wheezing, sneezing, and itching.

There is a link between allergic rhinitis and asthma called the “allergic march” whereby children with chronic allergies to food, pollen, pet dander, or others can have their immune system become so overactive that more serious conditions like asthma can occur. Not all children with allergic rhinitis develop asthma but they do all develop inflammation of the airways in response to allergens leading to swelling, mucus production and airway constriction. Chronic inflammation in the nasal passages of children with allergic rhinitis can affect the lower airways over time, contributing to the development of asthma.
Moducare: A Promising Natural Alternative to Allergy Medications
The research findings suggest that Moducare is a promising therapeutic option for children with allergic rhinitis. By balancing immune responses and reducing inflammatory markers, Moducare treatment led to significant improvements in clinical symptoms and objective measures of nasal function. Importantly, the therapy was well-tolerated by the children, with no reported side effects.
